I showed an interest in painting at an early age, and was greatly encouraged and taught by my Mother and Grandfather who were both Watercolour Artists.
At Junior School I won prizes in "Art". Later, during my time at Marlborough College, I was further inspired by my art master Guy Barton, commonly known as "Arty Barty"!
Although I pursued a career in medicine rather than a creative path, my love of art stayed with me and continued to grow. Since retiring, a few years ago from General Practice, I now have more time to focus on this life long passion.
I paint mainly in watercolour, but also in oils, and have more recently taken up iPad drawing, where I can express myself in an unrestricted way in a new medium.
I like to work quickly and not payng too much attention to detail, so that my work looks atmospheric and abstract. Amongst other artists I am especially inspired by Ron Ranson and John Yardley.
Since retiring from general practice in Wotton under Edge Dr. James Roberts has had more time to pursue his lifetime hobby of painting. He especially enjoys painting in watercolours and more recently has taken up iPad drawing.
Apart from his love of painting scenes of his local surroundings and the English countryside, he is inspired by visiting other countries, and much of his work includes scenes from his travels in Southern Europe and New Zealand.
He is happy to take on commissions.
